Sprig
Eight days ago I
kissed our little Sprig good-bye for the last time. She was lying on a
table at the animal hospital limp and unable to move except for her
head. As "Dr. Lila" through her own tears tried to reassure me that I
had made the only right choice her assistant gently searched for a big
enough vein in Sprigs tiny legs. I will never forget how Sprig at that
last moment struggled to raise her head and looked at me with those big
eyes as if she were saying "It's okay Mom" and then she was gone.
Sprig was about 12 years old. For 8 of those
years we had the privilege of being her owners. We found her at the
Humane Society in small cage in the cat room. Weighing only 4 1/2
pounds, she was smaller than most of the cats. The workers there kindly
put her there because the barking in the dog room upset her. She was a
stray and they named her Sprig because of the fly-away little bunch of
whitish hair that stood up on top of her head - her sprig. Her spindly
legs were about twice as long as they should have been to fit her skinny
body covered with scraggly black hair on top and bare underneath. She
had a beautiful little chihuahua type head with huge stand up ears and
big brown eyes. She looked like a "Disney" character. Sprigy had the
sweetest personality and endeared herself to everyone. Even those who
may have laughed a little at her unusual looks, or were not dog lovers
became Sprig's friends. She loved everyone, kids of any age included.
Sprig had a broken neck, the result of being picked up and shaken
by a much bigger dog.....
We love you Sprigy and everyone misses you
very, very much.
