DogStar/Sirius/Brightest star in the sky/ Canis Major (CMa)/The Great Dog

The sky's mighty hunter, Orion, battles the bull Taurus in the southern sky and his dogs are not far behind him.

Near his heel you will easily see the brightest star in the sky, Sirius. Sirius emblazons the chest of Canis Major, Orion's favorite dog. Sirius is known as the Dog Star, as Homer refers to it in the Iliad:

...the autumnal star, whose brilliant ray shines eminent amid the depth of night, whom men the dog-star of Orion call...

Dog Star is visible in the northern hemisphere during the winter months, and in the southern hemisphere during the summer months.
