Katie Pug

Katie Butry - 5/1/86-11/17/98
"Our little rescue pug who in 5 months gave and received a lifetime of love
...may you rest in peace"

On May 30, 1998, we were at a Pugorama in Virginia with our 2 pugs, Jake and Beauregarde...someone had dumped a 12 year old, 12 lb. pug....her name was Katie...she spotted my hubby and he spotted her at just about the same time...the looks on both of their faces would melt your heart....he carried her around the rest of the afternoon

....the Pugorama was to benefit the Pug Rescue effort in Maryland...the event was sponsored by the Pug Dog Club of Maryland of which we are both members...we also adopted Beauregarde (who is 8) in April of 1998...since Pug Rescue was familiar with us they decided to let us adopt Katie...we were concerned at first wondering how the 2 boys would take to her

...well, within 10 minutes she let them know that from then on she was boss...and the 3 of them became fast "pug friends"....I'm a veterinary technician and I had resources available to me to take care of our little Katester...she had a collapsing trachea, fluid in her lungs and around her heart and she was progressing into heart failure accompanied by frequent bouts of diarrhea...my fellow technicians and 3 veterinarians were wonderful with Katie...everyone did everything they could and for 4 1/2 months Katie led a relatively painfree life that was filled with love, care and total devotion

...she would sleep on my hubby's lap for hours...our 2 pugboys would sit next to her to keep her safe and warm and would sleep side by side with her every night (when she wasn't sleeping with her Mommy and Daddy)

...the first of November I noticed she seemed a little sluggish, she coughed more and ate less...she just wanted to stay close to use whenever she could...on November 17th, I knew it was time and I made the decision to let her go to the Rainbow Bridge.

..she passed away quietly in my arms at 3:00 p.m....I still feel guilty at times, but I know we did everything we could and made her last months happy and full of love...one of our veterinarians told me "You gave her life and you gave her peace"...those words will live in my heart forever...we miss our little Katie...gone, but never forgotten...
