We had to let go of our best friend today. Three weeks ago he seemed healthy and happy, no outward signs of the cancer that was ravaging his system. Within a week he could no longer walk, we carried him to where ever he wanted to be. But we will never forget his adoring smile, his eagerness to please, his need to just be our friend and companion. In true Bernese Mountain Dog fashion he loved to pull carts, visit nursing homes and schools as a therapy dog, or have snow balls thrown to him to catch.

Our friend left us on exactly his favorite kind of day: snowing lightly, cool enough that he thought it was comfortable, and beautiful blue skies. It was a day made for him. He now lies in our new flower garden where there will be a dogwood planted above him. We still have our friend near our side where he belongs.

But it will be your smile that we miss the most.
