Digger

On Oct. 23, 1999 we lost our truest, and best friend in the whole world. Digger a Jack Russell/Irish Terrier mix would have been 14 yrs old this coming Dec. 10. He was the sweetest little dog, he helped me through alot of hard times, the kids growing up and leaving home, a work accident that kept me from returning to work.

My accident was 9 yrs ago. So Digger and I were together most of the time, I ws at home except for shopping and errands and a vacation every 2 yrs. He followed me everywhere. He was taking losts of meds over the last 2 yrs. He had Cushings disease, and stomach problems. Sometimes we had to hand feed him. He got full of arthritis the last year and couldn't do steps anymore, so we would carry him to where ever we were, because he wanted to be near us.

He seemed to be just fine on Fri. the 22 and I feel so guilty, because I was so busy that day, cleaning rugs. At dinner time, he ate real good, and on his own too, Then about 9:30 PM he laid with me on the sofa as he usually did, and then he started to vomit, and he did this about 10 times. And he couldn't get comfortable, so we called the vet about 11:00PM. He said to meet him, he gave him a shot to calm his stomach, and a mild sedative. We brought him home and put him to bed with us, he fell asleep before we ever left the vets office.

About 12:30 AM his breathing was hard and labored, I called the vet back he said to prop him on a pillow, I did, and it did seem to help, so I fell asleep, I awoke about 2:30 AM and he had passed away.

If only I had known, the end was so near, I would have held him in my arms till the end. I will never forgive myself for falling asleep, and not being able to say goodbye to my dear devoted Digger, or for being so busy, his last day of life. I only hope and pray, he is in a better place, and that he knows, how much I love and miss him.

I will never forget you Digger, You will always, be in my heart.
