Benny
1986-6/1998
Benny was a 12 year old abused Doberman that I took in as a hospice dog.
In the 6 short weeks that he lived at my house he learned to play, the
joy of having his own blankets, and the friendship of other dogs. Even
though he had some socialization problems he tried so hard to be one of
the household. He was a sweet hearted dog that just could not forget the
abuse he had endured. He weighed only 35 pounds when rescued and was so
sunburnt his black coat was red. When he left for his last journey to
the Rainbow Bridge he was about 50 pounds and black and sleek. Everyone
tells me what a good person I was to take him in but the truth of it is
I wasn't the hero of Benny's story, he was. I have other dogs and always
thought of the unconditional love they give every day but living with
Benny taught me what it really is. Even though he had a terrible life he
still could trust me and meet everyone who came in my door with a big
Dobie smile.
The end was not as I would have planned but I guess I couldn't take away
his demons. Benny was sent to the bridge by me and our kind vet. Benny
seemed to know that he was leaving for a better place and rushed to the
Bridge. He will always be remember by me as a sweet loving old man.
To Benny: Rest well my friend, I know you are finally free of the demons
that chased you. You will always be my good old boy. I look forward to
the day when I see your Dobie smile once again.
